point Drop type psoriasis stands for a relatively rare subtype of psoriasis, that is mainly characterized by tiny blisters on joints of fingertips and toes instead of skin symptoms as other types do. Therefore, it is also referred to as "pinhead-sized papulosis" or "punctate reactive epidermal disease." As of now, there is no firmly established understanding on the pathogenesis of point drop type psoriasis; yet some research has indicated possible involvement of immune system malfunction, hereditary factors, infection and medication etc.
On the other hand, nail-type psoriasis is one of the common types of psoriasis, which affects mainly nails with symptoms like deformation, color pigmentation or peeling off, seriously compromising normal-hand-and-foot functionality. Digital type psoriasis and hammer toes both are just some forms of nail-type psoriasis and they have strong correlation with each other. It can be misdiagnosed as arthritis or rheumatism due to its often associated symptoms like joint pain and swelling.
There has been no specific and effective treatment for both diagnosis available up to now, all means are aimed to alleviate symptoms, relieve pains, and prevent recurrence. The commonly used methods are including:
1. Local treatment: including softeners, topical steroids, vitamin D preparations, etc. These medications can alleviate symptoms such as desquamation, itching, etc., but should not be used for long-term periods in order to avoid hormone dependency.
2. Phototherapy: Phototherapy, which is effective for common psoriasis, is also applicable to point drop type one. UV therapy can relieve symptoms, inhibit inflammatory reaction, and have no steroid side effects. Yet it always comes with potential risks, so the guidance from doctor is essential.
3. Biological agents: biological agents are specific treatment methods focused on inflammatory factors, suitable for more severe point drop and nail-type psoriasis. Regardless of efficiency, price, dosage etc., it's still lack of sufficient experience, so strict compliance with the instructions is necessary.
